Versatile, fast lineups impressing Vickerman

With just over a week of practices in the books since the arrival of most of Melbourne United’s NBL23 roster, Head Coach Dean Vickerman said he’s been impressed by the flashes his side has shown.

Speaking to SEN on Thursday afternoon, Vickerman said while the side may look very different, their structure on court is starting to take shape.

“It’s going to be different… The replacements that we’ve got are going to change our structure a little bit,” he said.

“Already you can see in the way that we play there’s some athleticism that’s amazing, there’s an ability to break people down off the dribble, the skill sets are a little bit different so if we can be super solid defensively I think our running game can be as good or better than last year.”

“We believe that there’s certainly an ability to play fast. We’ve got a few guys who can play multiple positions as well so once we get them to understand their role in one position, we’ll then structure it in a way to teach them how to go up or down a position.”

Vickerman pointed to the culture of the club for its ability to so quickly integrate new players into its system, and praised Captain Chris Goulding, who recently extended his contract with the club for two more years, for his leadership.

“(Goulding) is committed to this club as our captain and our leader, as the guy that drives so much of what we do and our culture.”
