Incoming Melbourne United signing Kyle Bowen has taken home a prestigious award at the St Mary’s University Gael Awards show.

Bowen took home the George R. McKeon Scholar-Athlete Award after helping lead Saint Mary's to a five seed in the NCAA Tournament and a Round of 32 appearance for the second-consecutive season. He was also named an Academic All-WCC and Academic All-District selection following the season.

The award win adds to the list of accolades for the 22-year-old WA native, who comes into the United system with an impressive resume, including an NBL Championship in his lone season as a Development Player with the Perth Wildcats.

Damian Martin, who played alongside Bowen during that season, has spoken highly of the young big-man, telling NBL.com that he will have an immediate impact on United winning games

“He makes players around him better. Melbourne United is a better team because they got KB’s signature,” he said.

“I’m a big fan of KB... He’s one of those guys where if you only judge players based on box scores you certainly don’t understand his game and what he can bring to every team.

“St Mary’s is a great NCAA Division I team, and he’s played massive minutes for them night in, night out and continually delivered.”

Bowen is currently finishing his schooling in America before heading back to Australia and joining United towards the start of July.
