Landale lauds Anthony’s ‘great decision’ to sign with United

Former Melbourne United star and Grand Final MVP Jock Landale has heaped praise on Cole Anthony for putting himself in a ‘good situation’ to play some great basketball ahead of the NBL27 season.

Having himself used United as a jumping off platform to find success in the NBA, Landale said the move is one he sees benefitting both sides.

Speaking on Triple M on Monday evening, Landale broke down the significance of the signing, as well as his genuine surprise when the news hit.

“I was a little bit worried and was texting their CEO, Nick Truelson, saying ‘What’s going on?’ because they kind of put all the player signings on hold while they were figuring out the coaching situation,” he said.

“All of a sudden they’ve signed Jacob Chance who did a really good job with the G-League for the San Antonio Spurs and then it’s been like bang, bang, bang and they’ve got Cole Anthony.”

“I had no idea it was coming, I was completely shocked… (He is an) incredibly talented scorer, highly athletic and one of those guys who just loves to hoop which I understand is a big reason why he signed down here.

“He was like ‘I want to go play some basketball’ being 26 years old, he hit the reset and I think he’s made a great decision, being that I was playing for United when I was 26 as well.

“I think he’s going to really find himself in a good situation here.”

Following his stellar season with United, Landale has tallied 297 NBA games, five of which have come against Anthony during his time with the Orlando Magic. This includes a 20-point, eight-rebound performance from the dynamic guard in 2023.
