Across a season full of highlights, perhaps no Melbourne United player received more praise than Shea Ili.
The Kiwi guard had a star-making year, averaging a career best in assists while shooting the ball at an elite level and hounding opposing players with his lockdown defence.
Speaking to MU Media shortly after the completion of the NBL22 season, Ili said it was a campaign to remember.

“From the start it felt like we had good vibes around the group.
“It was tough to back up a Championship winning year the year before, but we definitely felt like we had the team to do it from the beginning of the season.
“We made some good memories with the boys and it was a team to remember.”
Taking home the league’s Best Sixth Man Award, as well as being crowned as United’s Defensive Player of the Year and SHARE Award winner, Ili played an invaluable role in Melbourne’s top-of-the-table NBL22 season.
Whether at home or on the road, Ili relished being back in front of fans as United rolled through the regular season.
“It was awesome (to be back in front of fans at John Cain Arena).
“After a year of playing in stadiums with 50% crowds , it was good to be able to play at home every weekend with our fans.
“We called ourselves road warriors… It was good to be able to go into other people’s home venues and get a win.”
This ‘road warrior’ attitude helped United to an 11-3 record away from home, which included a six-game winning streak.
Despite NBL22 being over, Ili has not stopped working as he eyes next season and his pursuit of another NBL Championship.
“I’m just trying to be great at the things I’m good at. I’ve just got to keep on working, keep grinding, I’ve always been someone to grind so I’ve just got to keep putting in the work and the results will show.”
