‘Phonomenal’ Ili providing unmatched energy

As Melbourne United secured their third straight win on Saturday night, few players were more instrumental than Shea Ili.

The kiwi guard equalled his season high in scoring, leading all MU players in that department with 16 points.

While this was impressive, it’s everything he does that doesn’t show up on the score sheet that makes him one of the most valuable players in the league according to assistant coach David Barlow.

Speaking after the game, Barlow praised the two-time NBL champion.

“He’s phenomenal,” he said.

“Both on court and off court, offensive and defensive ends, he’s elite. He’s inspiring. Tonight I was so happy to see him play the way he did, he was huge for us.

“I’m just picturing him locking in on defence and it just gets everyone up and about.  He’s unique, he has a special gift, he’s world class in that regard, we’re very lucky to have him.”

Across his 28 minutes against the 36ers, Ili blew up countless hand-off actions, one of which came down the stretch leading to a layup, sealing the victory for United.

Always one to play with elite energy throughout the game, Ili credited the fans for providing the boost he and his teammates need across the entire 40 minutes.

“It’s awesome to come out here and see all the fans,” he said.

“We love them out here, they just bring that energy that we need to start off the game and throughout the game as well.”

United fans will get their next chance to see Ili hit the court in the Open Air Game against the Perth Wildcats on Saturday 23 December from 8pm.
