Heading into his second season with Melbourne United, wing scorer Tanner Krebs looks to be in the best form of his career.
Playing in the NBL1 South, which many have argued is the strongest conference in the country, Krebs has established himself as one of the nation’s best scorers with the Sandringham Sabres.
A lights-out shooter with a strong ability to attack the rim, the 28-year-old had some huge games for United in NBL24, including a 23-point performance in 19 minutes.
As he moves towards his fifth season in the NBL, Head Coach Dean Vickerman believes Krebs can be a major weapon for MU as a microwave scorer whenever they need it.
“Tanner has been elite in the NBL1 for a long time now, first in the Gold Coast and now down here," he said.
"For him to be able to be a leader of that Sandringham team, lead the league in scoring, play with confidence has been great to see.
“He’s been one of our best guys this offseason in terms of getting in the weight room and continuing to build up his body so we’re looking forward to seeing big strides from him next year.
“We mostly played him behind Chris (Goulding) last year and I think he’s grown his game to the point where we can play them together more, either with him at the two with his ball handling and ability to attack, or at the four as more of a stretch option.
“I think there’s a greater versatility to his game now where he can be an effective scoring option off the bench.”
Having put on such a shooting masterclass this NBL1 season, Vickerman says he could see a world where Krebs could be used in similar ways as Goulding with his ability to stretch the floor.
“Most of our offence is built on ball movement and finding the open man, but obviously we have sets and options to get guys like Chris open out of timeouts.
“If Tanner can continue this growth, he can definitely be someone that we run similar plays for when Chris is out of the game and use his elite shooting to be a dangerous threat that teams need to be aware of.”
