‘Amazing’ Goulding continues to shatter records

Despite being in his ninth season with Melbourne United, Chris Goulding continues to amaze both MU fans and basketball pundits around the nation.

United’s captain was a menace on Sunday afternoon, helping to lift his side to their sixth win in 16 days, while bringing up a number of milestones.

CG43 knocked down his 800th three-pointer with United in the first quarter before ultimately finishing with 33 points; his greatest scoring performance since 2014.

Goulding’s 34 triples across the first five rounds also ranks as the most ever in the 40-minute era, breaking his own record of 31 that he tallied in 2015-16.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Dean Vickerman said he could see a big performance coming from their pre-game meetings.

“He was amazing all night,” he said.

“I could see him when we were doing film before the game, we talked about people stepping up and anytime he sees a couple of key guys in Delly (Matthew Dellavedova) and Ian (Clark) being out, he puts those things on his shoulders himself.”

While Goulding acknowledged his intent to be more aggressive without Dellavedova and Clark, he praised United’s supporting cast for their efforts.

“IC is such a big part of what we do and he’s been fantastic up until now, so there’s a hole that was there, and you don’t try and fill it all by yourself,” Goulding explained.

“What I love about this team is that there’s going to be opportunities for a lot of guys. We saw Kyle Bowen take that the other night, we saw Tanner (Krebs) and Flynn (Cameron) step up tonight and take those opportunities and that’s what you want to see.

“I just had to be aggressive, but I didn’t go out there to do whatever it says on the box score, I just knew we’d come off a long stretch of games and we needed some leadership and aggressiveness to get this done.”
