Vickerman said Goulding had been playing with an elite level of confidence leading into Saturday

Two days removed from Chris Goulding’s 46 point performance, Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman has provided some insight into what contributed to the stellar shooting display.

Having tallying 21 points on Thursday evening, Vickerman said Goulding came into the game against Perth feeling confident, but also disappointed he wasn’t able to fully capitalise on all his opportunities against the Bullets.

“I thought he had a good game in Brisbane, he shot the ball well,” Vickerman said.

“I remember him coming to me in the Brisbane game and saying ‘every shot that I’ve missed, I thought was going in.’

“He was just in this really confident mode, and we needed a little kickstart in that third quarter, so to pour in 22 points in under four minutes was an extraordinary effort.”

While much of the attention has gone towards Goulding’s nine three-point makes on Saturday, Vickerman lauded his overall offensive performance, which saw him connect on seven of his 11 attempts inside the arc.

“It wasn’t just the three-ball that was so spectacular, it was his all-around offensive game.

“Credit to some other guys, Rob Loe screened unbelievably for him on a number of those three pointers that he got, Delly (Matthew Dellavedova) sensed the moment and just kept trying to find ways to get Chris an open look.”

United will next take the court on Sunday 17 November from 2:30pm in a blockbuster clash with the Adelaide 36ers.

Both teams will come into the contest off a week of rest, so Vickerman is wanting his group to come out fully firing.

“We’ve got this one more game against Adelaide this Sunday and then the FIBA window after that so all of our juice is going into playing well next Sunday.”

Tickets to the game are available here.
