‘Everybody eats’ mindset allowing Doyle to thrive

Fresh off his highest-scoring game in United colours, nothing has changed for Milton Doyle.
The star import went about his business as usual at practice on Monday, working with his teammates to iron out any issues that presented themselves following another successful week.
Per minute, the Chicago native is having as productive a season as he’s ever had in the NBL, which he says is a result of an environment where everyone is willing to put in the work behind the scenes to enjoy success on the court.
“It just comes down to doing the work,” Doyle explained.
“It’s been easy to settle in when everybody is coming into the gym focussed on getting better and reaching our common goal.
“The coaches are on that same path, so you come in everything is about ‘how can we help you reach the top level’.
“There’s a lot of unselfishness on this team where you just come in and do your job. It might not be your night that night, so you may defer to other guys.
“We don’t care who’s cooking as long as everybody eats. We just want to take the open shot, make the right plays, and that’s something that all of us are happy to do… It’s just about making the right reads and reacting to the defence.”
The 28 points Doyle scored to help sink the Bullets on Saturday evening are the most he’s tallied in a United uniform, and rank as his sixth-highest point scoring effort across his time in the league.
Two of these points came on the back of a brilliant crossover and dunk; his third slam of the season, something he’s been excited to feature more of after putting extra work into his lower body across the offseason.
“I did a lot of work with my old strength trainer from college. It was about putting the work into my legs, getting my strength back and getting that bounce back.
“It’s really easy playing here with all the shooters and spacing we have, it opens up the paint and when I see the line I’m going to attack.
“It’s funny because I’ve been messing with Dash (Daniels), telling him I’m going to get more dunks than him so that’s keeping me young.”
Looking at his pair of Round 10 opponents, Illawarra and Perth, Doyle is eager for the opportunity to build more momentum ahead of the FIBA Window.
“I think we’re playing against two good teams so these next two games are very important.
“We want to stay on top, so winning these gives us a great opportunity to test ourselves and stack more wins before the break.”
Doyle will next take to the court on Friday evening on the road when we face the Illawarra Hawks from 7:30pm. The game will be streamed live from 7:30pm on ESPN.
This leads into our next home game, a Sunday 23 November matchup with the Perth Wildcats from 4:30pm inside of John Cain Arena.
