Ingles breaks down ‘exciting group’ of NBL27 teammates

With just over a month remaining until Melbourne United’s first game of the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 season, star recruit Joe Ingles has heaped praise on the ‘exciting group’ of players the front office had put together.

Coming back to the league for the first time since 2009, Ingles has been surrounded by elite local talent, such as Chris Goulding, Shea Ili, Luke Travers and Sam Waardenburg, as well as a pair of spectacular imports in Cole Anthony and Josh Oduro.

Speaking as part of a feature interview with former United Championship guard, Peter Hooley, Ingles broke down his excitement to hit the court with his new teammates.

“I was talking to (Former Head Coach) Dean (Vickerman) originally, and even once Dean left, to me, the group (United) were trying to put together and what (United) were saying to me (in terms) of what they were trying to build was special anyway,” he said.

“Obviously, playing with Chris was a big part of it, playing with Shea was something I was really looking forward to if it happened.

“And then (Head Coach Jacob Chance’s) name pops up, and Sam signs, and you kind of go through the process of thinking ‘we’re going to be a decent team’, and then LT (Luke Travers) decides to come which is obviously a big one, and then we get Josh (Oduro) and Cole (Anthony).

“It’s just an exciting group… I think any team if you’re involved in sport, you just want as many good players as you can get.

“If you can have 12-15 of the best players, why wouldn’t you do that, then it’s on Chancey to figure out the rest.

“We’ve got a really good, deep, versatile team… so many guys can handle, so many guys can rebound and push, defensively we can play so many ways, so for us, we’ve got four, five, six weeks to keep figuring those things out.”
