NBL22 Debrief - Chris Goulding

NBL22 was a historic season for Chris Goulding.

Coming off his third NBL Championship (second with Melbourne United), Goulding led a new look team to another top-of-the-table regular season, all while working his way up the NBL’s all-time leaderboards.

Over the course of the season, CG moved into 12th all-time for three-pointers made, as well as moving into the top 40 all-time for total points.

Not one to hoard acclaim, Goulding praised his teammates for their ability to come together and play some inspired basketball throughout the campaign.

“I thought we showed great promise in some areas,” he said.

“We finished on top of the regular season as the best team… Some things didn’t go our way, but in many areas of the season we showed how good we could be when we played our best basketball.

“I think we gelled well together, we had a really great group of guys, just all good players, good people, and that makes it so much easier when you’re bringing in a mix of new people.

“It took us a little bit to get rolling on the court but I think we showed how good we could be at times when we were playing our defence, getting out and running, shooting the basketball and having fun playing with each other.”

United’s Captain highlighted one game in particular, Melbourne’s Throwdown XV victory over South East Melbourne, as a standout moment from the season.

Goulding played a huge role in the win, scoring 16 points and sinking a huge three-pointer down the stretch to cap off a game-winning 21-6 run.

“I think one of the most important games of the season was one of our Throwdown victories.

“We were behind by double digits in the fourth quarter and it was at a time where both teams were fighting for playoff position. It was a really big win for us to come from behind.”

After having his season ended by injury, CG43 is focussed on returning to 100% health to help United make another run at an NBL Championship.

“My goals are just to get healthy, to get strong and keep trying to improve.

“The goal is always a Championship, and I want to be a big part of Melbourne United’s next Championship.”
