The former NBA big-man is excited to suit up against the Pelicans on Friday evening

As excitement builds ahead of the first ever game between an NBA and NBL team on Australian soil, Melbourne United big-man Jesse Edwards says he and his teammates can’t wait to hit the court for the contest.

Speaking after practice on Thursday, Edwards said while the game is just an exhibition, bragging rights are still on the line.

“We’re all really pumped for the game, obviously,” Edwards said.

“We’ve had a good three official games in the season so far so everybody’s in a really good rhythm.  This one obviously doesn’t count for the championship, but it should be a really good show and a really fun game for all of us to play.

“It is one for bragging rights and at the end of the day that’s kind of what you play for in the first place.

“We’re all going to be competing, I know that’s for sure. With all the fans there, I think regardless of what it counts for it’s going to be a day full of energy and everybody is going to play like it matters.”

Head Coach Dean Vickerman said he will be looking for anything he can take away from the matchup, and is eager to feel the support of the local crowd inside Rod Laver Arena.

“Any time you get to play against an NBA team; play anyone that’s considered at a higher level than you’re at… you get to test yourself,” Vickerman explained.

“We’ve got players on our roster that (the NBA) is where they want to be, they want to be NBA players. Hopefully they can showcase their skills, hopefully our team-play can say we can execute our offence against this type of athleticism.

“We just want our fans to absolutely enjoy the experience, to rally behind us whatever moment in the game it is, to fuel the great things that we do and support that and make it one of the most memorable basketball games in Melbourne ever.”

Extremely limited tickets remain available to the contest by clicking here.

Those not in attendance can watch the historic game live on Channel 10 or on Amazon Prime Video.
