‘It was a fun night’ says Goulding following 46-point explosion

Melbourne United captain Chris Goulding says it’s been special to look back on his 46-point performance against the Perth Wildcats on Saturday night.

Goulding’s 46 points are the equal-third most in the modern 40-minute era of the NBL. 

Speaking to Andrew Gaze, who himself had 30 games of 46-points or more, and Andy Maher on SEN, Goulding touched on what he was feeling in the heat of the game.

“It was a fun night,” he said.

“I’m not usually too fond of the 8pm games, they’re a very late finish, but I reckon that might have changed my mind.

“To be honest, you don’t get too caught up in it (in the moment). Looking back now, it was pretty cool but at that point in time, you just want the ball, you just want to get another stop, you want to get another opportunity to see the ball go through the hoop.

“We were clawing our way back in and I just wanted any chance or opportunity to get the ball again and have another shot at it.”

Before his NBL-record 25-point, six-three-pointer third quarter, Goulding had tallied just 10 points on 3/11 shooting, while Melbourne trailed by 14 points.

Looking at what needed to be done coming out of half-time, CG43 explained why he was confident that getting back to the basics could lead United to victory.

“I was flat to be honest… What we spoke about was just sort of doubling down on what we’re really good at, which is when we’re physical and playing good, aggressive defence, that allows us to get out and run.

“I knew if we could get out and run, I wasn’t going to die wondering.”

Goulding will next be back on the court on Sunday afternoon as Melbourne face off against the Adelaide 36ers at John Cain Arena from 2:30pm.
