Wright praises Walker as ‘best point guard’ of modern era

Following another spectacular round of play, one of the league’s most successful coaches has heaped praise on Tyson Walker, hailing him as the best at his position that he’s seen across his time coaching in Australia.

Walker was electric in our Throwdown 30 victory over the South East Melbourne Phoenix, scoring 24 points, dishing out six assists and coming away with three steals.

Following the game, three-time NBL Coach of the Year winner coach Joey Wright spoke glowingly about Walker.

We’ve got to say something about Tyson Walker. I seriously think he's the best point guard that's been in this country since I've been here as a coach,” Wright said.

“I'm willing to debate that with anybody and I could debate any angle... His ability to score, play defence, understand timing, get his teammates involved, like he hits everything and I haven't seen a guard here hits everything.

“To me, that kid's an NBA player and I don't know why he's not there. Man, he's the best guard I've seen down here.”

Wright, who coached 500 games across 16 seasons, has seen some of the league’s best guards compete throughout the modern era of the NBL.

Looking ahead, the 2007 Championship winning coach said he likes how we are positioned after one third of the season.

“I think Melbourne is still in the driver’s seat right now,” he explained.

“They probably have the most insurance when it comes to injury of all teams. If you go through the other top teams, if they lose their top one or two guys, they’re going to struggle.

“Melbourne can probably lose one or two (players) as they had with Goulding and still be productive so I think they’re tough.

“They’ve still got Shea Ili coming back, which is going to be huge for them. I think he’s their motor so he drives them even more than where they’re at now.”

Fans will get their next opportunity to see Walker showcase his immense talent on Saturday 15 November for the club’s Member Appreciation Game at John Cain Arena from 7:30pm against the Brisbane Bullets.
